5. Reclaimed Wood Beam Mantel
A thin, wimpy mantel can make a fireplace look unfinished. Swapping it for a thick, chunky reclaimed wood beam adds instant character and a “modern farmhouse” touch.
- Materials Needed:
- Solid wood beam or a “hollow box” faux beam
- Heavy-duty lag bolts or mounting bracket
- Wood stain
- Drill
- Steps:
- Remove the old mantel and patch any holes.
- Locate the studs or the masonry anchors.
- Install a heavy-duty mounting bracket.
- Slide the beam onto the bracket and secure it with screws from the top.
- Stain the wood to match your flooring or furniture.
Pro Tip: A “hollow” beam is much lighter and easier to install than a solid 50-pound timber, and it looks identical once it’s on the wall.
