9. Limewash for Natural Stone

If you have a heavy, dark stone fireplace that feels too “heavy” for your room, don’t paint it with standard latex paint. Use Limewash. It’s a mineral-based finish that sinks into the stone, brightening it while still letting the natural texture show through.

  • Materials Needed:
    • Limewash paint (like Romabio)
    • Large masonry brush
    • Water for diluting
  • Steps:
    • Dampen the stone with water.
    • Dilute the limewash according to the instructions.
    • Brush it on, making sure to get into all the nooks and crannies.
    • If you want some stone to show through, use a wet rag to wipe sections away within the first hour.

Pro Tip: Limewash is very forgiving; if you don’t like the look, you can actually wash it off with a pressure sprayer within the first few days!
