6. Cane Webbing Cabinet Door Inserts

6

Cane webbing has moved from grandmillennial trend to a permanent fixture in home decor, and it’s surprisingly affordable when you buy it by the roll. Pressed cane webbing, available in several widths, can transform flat cabinet doors into something that looks custom-made.

Remove the door and take out any glass or solid panel. If the door is solid wood, you’ll need to cut an opening with a jigsaw — or choose a door with a removable panel to keep things tool-light. Cut the cane webbing about an inch larger than the opening on each side. Soak it in warm water for about twenty minutes to make it pliable, then press it into the groove and secure it with a spline and a thin bead of wood glue. As it dries, it tightens on its own.

Time: two hours per door plus soaking and drying. Difficulty: intermediate. If cutting into solid doors feels intimidating, look for a thrifted cabinet with glass-front doors you can convert. And if the real thing is out of budget, cane-patterned wallpaper or a roll of textured vinyl applied to the door front gives a similar look for a fraction of the cost.
