9. Spray Paint for Metal Furniture

9

Metal furniture is everywhere at thrift stores, estate sales, and curbsides — and it’s one of the fastest things to transform. A vintage filing cabinet, a set of patio chairs, a wire side table, or an old metal stool all respond beautifully to spray paint.

Clean the piece thoroughly with a degreaser, then sand any rust spots down to bare metal and wipe away the dust. Rusty areas need a rust-inhibiting primer, or a paint that includes primer in the formula. Work in light, even passes, holding the can about ten to twelve inches away and keeping your arm moving. Several thin coats beat one heavy coat every time — thick passes cause drips and a bumpy texture.

Time: one afternoon plus drying. Difficulty: beginner. A bold color like olive, terracotta, or deep navy gives a plain metal cabinet real presence. For patio pieces, choose an exterior-rated enamel so the finish survives the weather.

💡 Pro Tip: Spray paint behaves badly in humidity and cold. Aim for a dry day between 60 and 80°F, and let the piece cure for a full week before putting anything heavy on it.
